In the 1986 Australian comedy Crocodile Dundee, the main character, Michael J. “Crocodile” Dundee draws a large Bowie knife while stating “That’s not a knife. That’s a knife,” in response to a mugger with a rinky-dink folding pocket knife. The large fixed blade of the Bowie knife made the mugger’s pocket knife look like nothing more than a letter opener, however, following the release of the cult film, sales of Bowie knives skyrocketed.

Fast forward to the 21st century, and consumers are continuing to buy tactical knives of all kinds. Though many people associate knives with self-defense — yes there are tactical fighting knives — the majority of people that buy tactical knives use them as multipurpose tools.

Tactical knives for sale to the general public, and even those used by military personnel and law enforcement do not look like your grandfather’s pocket knife. Sorry Pop pop. Pocketknives in the past typically included more than one folding blade tucked into a handle. Modern tactical pocket knives are quite different, boasting a single thick, durable blade — some featuring aggressive serrations. The grips are ergonomically designed, and are meant to fit the hand snugly, rather than for aesthetic purposes.

So why do people buy tactical knives? They’re extremely practical. Military personnel and law enforcement officers uses them for a variety of tasks, such as cutting through brush and other obstacles. They are often used in search and rescue operations in order to cut rope and other troublesome materials. Also, they can be used in CQC, or close quarters combat.

Outdoor survivalists and hunters also used survival tactical knives for a number of purposes, including skinning and dressing game, cutting through brush, and setting up camp.
